Evolutionary tree map of the dog
This is the evolutionary tree map of dogs
The evolution of the dog started with their common ancestor, the grey wolf. The grey wolf evolved into European age breeds, ancient asiatics, and modern wolves.
Where and when they appeared
Large DNA study lining up with the earliest known dog fossils shows that dogs first appeared in Europe between 19,000 and 32,000 years ago in the cenozoic era. This time period was the quaternary period.

Differences between domestic dogs and the grey wolf
Even though domestic dogs are descendants of the grey wolf, they have a few differences. One difference that they have is that the domestic dog has smaller teeth than the grey wolf. Another difference between the two is that the domestic dog has a shorter and smaller muzzle than the grey wolf.

Evidence of the evolution of dogs
One piece of evidence of the evolution of dogs is that the domestic dog today and ancient wolves have very similar DNA. More evidence is how similar modern dogs bone structures are to ancient dogs.
